I was browsing your site re another matter and read with some alarm the advice on SVPs. In 2002 we had a side extension built - the builder replaced the existing cast iron soil pipe with a new plastic one presumably to simplify connecting up the new plumbing. The soil pipe is in the garage against the old wall of the house and does not run up through the roof. The bathroom is built above the garage and the bathroom lavatory is connected to the top of the soil pipe. The bathroom shower and basin drain into this stack and also the downstairs cloakroom lavatory and basin. From the shower waste, a 2 inch pipe goes up into the loft and that is topped by a Durgo valve. Therefore, there appears to be no outlet for any gases which may be given off. At the time when we asked the builder about this he said the only function of the SVP was to allow air into the system. Should we be worried, very worried or panic stricken about this?
thanks for your help

There has to be a vent pipe to atmosphere from the head of the drain, assuming you had planning permission, this should have been noticed.
Additional stacks can have an air admitance valve.
Worried; no get on to the builder or the inspector, and tell him you want it sorted ASAP.

Of course Scruff means this should have been noticed if you had Building Regulations Approval rather than Planning Consent ( which would not normally be required if the extension was under 50 cu. m. ).
In my view this is a fairly irrelevant practical requirement if its not causing problems however you deserve to have it done properly. If you have a proper Builder he should correct it. If you have East Europeans doing a bad job on the cheap then you may need to get the Building Control to force them to correct it ( IF it is not correct already! )
