I have a salt based water softener in a mains pressure water system (with Megaflo hot water supply). Every so often, probably following a refresh process, the water tastes very salty.

I can live with this (we have a direct drinking water tap), but wonder (A) what this is doing to the pipework, and if likely to do any damage (B) what the cause is likely to be.

Any suggestions welcomed, thanks in advance

Its a little difficult to guess whats wrong but its probably a combination of too much salt and too little washing.

Most softeners have some kind of controller, often operated by a geared motor.

Perhaps the washing process is failing? Is there a good flow to drain during washing and is it for 5-10 minutes or whatever the book says?

Generally, when there is a salty taste in the water following the regeneration, it is because the rinse cycle is not doing its job.

Do you have a prefilter before the softener? If so, it may be clogged and not allowing enough water to fully rinse the salt out.

Depending on your specific valve and settings, you may need to have it looked at and adjusted.
