Get woken up in morning and occasionally during day by loud moaning noises from boiler Sad . Goes on for about 10 minutes. Ideal has replaced both fan and ignition unit (why ??) and gone away puzzled. Still no difference though. Reducing boiler thermostat setting to cutoff gas whilst noise apparent immediately stops noise. You can hear noise loudly through return pipe connection if you use the old car engine noise detector....
Anyone got an idea??

It sounds as if the mixture is wrongly set too weak!

Is the noise more apparent outside from the flue terminal?

Many thanks for your response. No - no noise from flue terminal outside the building. It really is apparent only inside the boiler (and through the pipework). The Ideal guy is coming again to have a look at it in the morning. Is the gas valve is the only area left now? Thats where he can adjust the mixture I presume?

Uh-uh. Pump brand new and dead silent. Ideal guy came again yesterday and once more drew a blank. Says he's going to fit a new gas valve (more in hope than anything else - and he didn't have one on his van) and then muttered that maybe there was some blockage in the heat exchanger..... Confused

OK - so here I am again! Not impressed by speed of Ideal returning to attend to problem. They last came on 19th November, leaving with a promise to return with a gas valve. Nothing happened for ten days so I called and got hold of the job number Laughing . Can now progress chase. They are sending an "agent" (and not the same one as before) to fit a new gas valve AND a new heat exchanger on 18th December....watch this space. Meanwhile the moaning continues - and not all from the boiler either...... Evil or Very Mad

It does not sound like the gas valve!

Before choosing to change it he should have done a flue gas analysis measurement.

It may well be a scaled up heat exchanger. I find that easy to identify but most of the Ideal staff are just parts changers!
