On closed loops when there are any ferrous materials i.e. steel rads, then oxygen must be prevented form entering the loop or corrosion will result.
The latter problem needs to be avoided at all costs with smaller diameter pipes.
Barrier pipes have a layer (often an aluminium layer) that prevents the passing of oxygen through the pipe into the water.
There is no need for barrier pipe in the DHW circuits as this is continually being replenished with fresh oxygenated water and thus a barrier is pointless.
