There are various ways of doing this but the costs are relatively high given the very small savings. Bigger financial savings can be made from reducing the amount of hot (and cold) water used to start with. Low water consumption washing machines and dishwashers can save significant amounts of water and energy. Wash basins can use spray taps or aerators which have a lower flow rate can be used to cut waste, as will showers fitted with low flow rate heads.
Additionally, cold water can be saved by selecting a WC with a 6-litre flush and by installing water butts (the more the better). Further water savings can be made through using 'grey water'. This involves using lightly soiled water from baths and showers to be used for low-grade uses such as gardening and flushing the WCs and can potentially reduce water consumption by 30%.
