just brought a place but I can't figure the system out as yet, I'm hoping you guys can shed some light on the matter.
The main bolier is a potterton profile running in gravity mode (switch is set in this mode and not in the fully pumped mode), a vented cylinder in the loft which has a built-in water tank above it, a room stat and programmer. It seems the CH is pumped but as no 3 port valve so I have no independant control of the CH or HW, what I did notice is that on the CH return pipe a stopcock which I assume was used to control the system in the summer. Also the bolier seems to run for a while and then switches off and then back on after a while, initially I thought it might be the cylinder stat but I can't see one fitted, the room stat is on max all the time.
My question to you guys is what would be controlling the temp in the cylinder ? why might the boiler be shutting down and then re-firing after a short period ? how much work is involved in installing a mid position valve ? |

I would guess that its a fully pumped system with a stopcock to turn off heating during the summer.
The boiler will cycle when its flow temperature reaches the temperature set on the boiler stat.

| The pump seems only to be on the CH side as the pump is tee'd off the flow and return pipes. If I wanted to change it to a fully pumped system, would I need a cylinder stat ? Also if I wanted more HW pressure, would I need a new HW cylinder and a separate cold water tank with more "head" ? |
