We have a combination boiler by Ikon, I can find out the exact model if necessary. It passed its annual check about four months ago with flying colours (apparently).
The problem is that sometimes the heating just won't come on. At the moment our thermometer is reading 21 degrees but we have it set to 30, and still no heating. The boiler is on "winter" setting.
When this has happened before I've been able to coax it into life by resetting it a few times and turning the thermostat insanely high as we have tonight. It's not working so far. Hot water is not a problem and the boiler roars into life whenever a hot water tap is used. Oh, and it's not the timer because that's currently set to be on 24/7.
Any ideas? |

| You need to find out whether the demand signal is reaching the boiler. It shouldn't make any different how far above the current temp, a stat is set. |

Yes, after further tinkering it appears it's a problem with the thermostat. Sometimes there's a clearly audible click when it's set above the current temperature. Other times there's no sound at all. When it does click, the heating does come on.
Faulty thermostat then, it seems. Thanks Chris. |

Just a thought - does the thermostat have a LARGE temperature dial? Some of the ACL/Drayton ones need mains to work, so they get wired up wrongly.
I'll look for a pic...

Chris, I really appreciate your help.
What we have is a Drayton Digistat 1:
It's been working perfectly all day today - after messing with it last night I left it after it had clicked when going from below to above measured temperature. Looks like that's the key, and that sometimes it just doesn't click when I'm setting it.
The Digistat 1 does appear to be mains-powered, by the way. |

Nooo those are battery powered. The battery contacts can go noisy on those, perhaps they go intermittent. I was called to replace a radio version of one of those this pm and it was just dirty battery contacts - and that's the third I've had do that!
The battery drawer comes right out if you wiggle it, then you can get a cotton bud or similar up to the spring contacts.
The relay inside makes quite an audible click, whch should happen every time the flame symbol appears or vanishes.

Aha! The website I was looking at implied it was mains-powered. OK, I'll try cleaning those contacts then. Thank you very much for the help Chris, it's much appreciated. |

I had exactly the same problem. Finally worked out that the boiler wasn't seeing 240v from Digistat 3, cleaned the battery contacts and all is fine. I wish I'd looked on here 3 days earlier- It would have saved me a lot of hair pulling.
Thanks again for the valued help _________________ Plumbing is stressfull |
