replacing a normal bi-metallic wall mounted thermostat, which is part of a potterton combi boiler.
The Thermostat I bought was a 2 contacts type instead of the broken one I am replacing which had three.
I had turned the boiler off and the mains supply plug off. However while I was disconnecting the yellow wire that should go into the 3rd connector, the mains switch was turned on. Now the mains light on the front of the boiler does not light up.
could the disconnected 3rd wire cause a fuse to blow on the pcb. The mains light still lights up but the mains indicator doesn't not light up on the boiler.
The pilot light works fine.
Many thanks.

A thermostat on a boiler should only be changed by someone who is competent. The minimum qualification for that is Corgi registration.
If you get it wrong and you're lucky, you get a problem like the one you have. If you'd been unlucky, the boiler could have exploded.
Call a Corgi registered boiler repair person.
