One of the simplest ways to reduce water consumption is to get it from another source in the first place. By routing all the surface water from your roof into underground storage tanks, this water can then be used for all non-potable requirements.
Such systems include submerged automated pumps which kick in when you open a tap, allowing the water to be used for watering gardens, car washing etc.
Hosepipe bans may be avoided if the hosepipe is used on an outside tap, which is fed by stored rainwater. Providing the system is designed such that if the rainwater has run out then a switching mechanism switches potable water to inside the house automatically but NOT to the outside taps to which the hosepipe would be used.
It is possible to take this a step further and use this water to supply the WC's & washing machines thus cutting down drastically on the quantity of water taken from the mains.
Figures show aprox 60% of the water used in a house is for flushing WC’s and washing machines.
There are purpose made systems available such as the FreeWater system, this provides an underground storage tank. The GREEN shop in Hereford resells old bulk fruit juice containers, for the purpose, or you could employ a septic tank in the role. Filters, Pumps, float valves, diverter's etc. all exist to plumb into your main system.
