I’m about to do some home refurbishment and will be replacing the old boiler (oil). I want to do away with the cold tank in the loft and the hot water cylinder. Looking at the various options, the heat bank / thermal store system looks good in principle but I’m not sure about the running costs. At a time of ever-increasing oil prices I don’t want to install a system that’s expensive to run.
As I understand it, water is stored at temperatures around 80°C. My question is, are these systems costly to run? How does the running cost compare with a standard hot water cylinder? |

About the same as an unvented cylinder.
Of course, manufacturers make claims about reduced boiler cycling, but there are other factors which play against the thermal store.
Personally I don't like them, because as time goes by they can be maintenance liabilities.
Why not look at the ACV unvented cylinder, its a tank in tank design, stores water at 80-85C but is not a thermal store........... |
