My son has a degree in chemistry but cannot find work locally so is thinking of retraining as a plumber. The number of training companies out there is mind boggling, and every day a new ad for plumbing franchises with full training appears in the press. Are they any good? I don't want him to sink into even more debt (still got student loan to pay) for a course and find that his qualification is just a useless piece of paper. Many are advertised above the pages of this forum eg Reactfast in Birmingham, can he really become a plumber in 6 weeks? Obviosly having done 4 yrs at university already he does not want to go down the normal route of 3yrs at college etc. He needs to earn a living - soon! All advice will be gratefully received. |

The training courses that promise to make you a plumber in a few weeks are not worth considering. Think hard about it. Would you be happy with a plumber working in your house, on his own, with just a 6 week course as his only experience?
The training necessary does take years for a very good reason and you need work experience as part of it too.
Forget about plumbing, honestly. It will not be worth it.
Sorry that's blunt but it's true. |
