Although conventional boilers are getting more efficient, they must be designed so that the gases do not condense and corrode the heat exchanger (condensing boilers are designed to withstand this). This effectively puts an upper limit on efficiencies of a little over 80%. While condensing boilers can operate at efficiencies well over 90%. However what really matters is the average efficiency over the whole year and measurements show that condensing boilers typically achieve 85%, whilst conventional boilers are in the low to mid 70s.
