As a side effect of installing a thermal store with an UFH system, it is also possible to install a pumped hot water return loop.
Here the hot water is fed from one side of a 3 port temperature blending valve to the draw off locations in 22mm pipe, at the last draw off point a single return pipe then goes back to the 3 port valve.
This has a very low speed non-ferrous pump installed. This just keeps the water moving in the pipe, with the result that when you open the tap – you get hot water with no delay. The pump does not supply the pressure this is from your normal pressure feed – typically mains water pressure via a thermal store.
These systems make for less wastage of water – useful if you are on a meter, and the pumps have a built in timer, so that it only runs during normal expected usage times.
